No-fail tips to excel the job interview

Does facing a job interview give you jitters? No matter how well qualified and skilled you are, impressing the interviewer is what matters. Your resume and certificates tell about your achievements, but speak nothing about your qualities and talent. An interview can last for an hour or two, but it is in the initial 15-minutes that the interviewer decides whether you are perfect for the job or not.

These career tips will help you ace the job interview, and win Brownie points with your interviewer.

  • Read about the company: So you got a job call and you are busy gathering your resume, certificates, and practicing mock interviews. Remember, the standard question any interviewer asks is ‘What do you know about the company?’ Do not let this question take you off-guard, when you can easily read up about the company beforehand. Do your homework and learn about the company and the job requirement, and face this question bravely.
  • Brush up your industry knowledge: Intrigue the interviewer with up-to-date and polished knowledge about your industry. There are always new developments, researches, and studies coming up in every field. Nothing beats being well read and knowing the latest developments in your area of expertise.
  • Discuss about the job-culture: After the initial round of questions regarding your qualifications and past work experience, it is time for discussions to see whether you ‘fit’ in the office or not. Each office has its own set of rules – office timings, dress code, discipline, work culture, etc. While the interviewer will brief you about these aspects, this is the opportunity for you to voice your queries, air your opinion, and discuss about your work values.
  • Have a dialogue: Interviews are two-way communication. It does not mean that the interview gets to ask all the questions while you simply do the answering. Towards the end, the interviewer will ask if you have any queries. Be ready for this and form your questions beforehand. This is an important career tip, so remember this – ask questions that reflect your eagerness to know about the job and the prospects. While you are asking the questions, make sure that you put forward the idea that you are keen to know and work for the organization. Also, form questions that highlight your skills.

Job interviews do not necessarily have to be daunting procedures. With these career tips, go for the interview prepared and with a positive attitude. Confidence will help you come out of any interview with a smile, and an offer letter!
