Resume writing is an art and in fact, you will find specialist resume writers who charge a bomb to pen down your curriculum vita e. Although resume writing may not be your forte, you can draft a decent one that can grab you the desired job. How? Here is a list of the common mistakes that you should avoid while writing your resume. You are good to go if you follow the below checklist.

1. Incomplete details – Mention your complete address in the biodata. If you are not including it, an employer may get skeptical about your place of residence. How can he offer you a job in any location? In addition, such details provider employers some idea on your culture, language and other such information.

2. Too many contact details – Most of us include two to three phone numbers in our resume. Employers do not like this. Include just one number (your mobile number) on which you are accessible all day.

3. Generic objectives – ‘I want to lead a team in five years’. Is this what you have written in your resume? Then reform it. Too general objectives/summary is written by most of us. However, this sounds unprofessional. Write specific objectives as it portrays you as a focused person.

4. Professional email address – Double check your email address before printing your resume. Also, do not use unprofessional or too long email address.

5. Edit your job experience- You do not have to write each job in your resume. Write down the key ones specific to your field.

6. Highlighting – Using too much of bold, underline or highlight is a strict no-no.

7. Don’t use one resume for all jobs- Most of us commit this mistake. Irrespective of how good you have drafted your resume, it cannot bring the desired result from every job you apply. Therefore, edit the resume before sending your job application.

8. List your experience first than your education if your profile is more important.

9. Limit your work experience list – Do not include more than 20 years of data. Also, do not provide your graduation year if it is more than 20 years ago.

10. Mention your computer skills – This is a key component of a resume which most of us consider obvious and hence avoid putting down on paper.

11. Use bullet points – Make use of bullet points while noting your education and job descriptions. Paragraphs are bygones and hence should be avoided completely.

12. Don’t use terms like cooperative, hardworking, team player etc., if you do not have an illustration to support them.

13. Don’t extend your resume beyond two pages. Use easily readable fonts like Times New Roman or Arial, preferably 10-12 font size.

14. Always proof check your resume for grammar and spelling errors.
