To do or not do an MBA?

Posted on | August 20, 2011 | No Comments

We keep hearing very often why those aspiring for management jobs  should do a MBA and get on the fast track for career success.  In fact, this site itself will be featuring articles and tips to help students who intend to pursue a MBA degree. However, it is not very often that somebody sticks her neck out and proclaims boldly that doing a MBA is a waste of time and money. That is precisely what Penelope Trunk does in her post on BNET.

Irrespective of whether you agree with her reasoning or not, the piece is interesting for the deviant perspective it lends (and of course for the tinge of humour). Afterall, it’s always good to listen to both sides of a story before making a decision-they might teach that at business school.  Nevertheless, here’re the 7 reasons why Penelope thinks you shouldn’t waste money on doing a MBA:

  • Business school won’t help you be a good entrepreneur.
  • You likely don’t need an MBA for what you want to do.
  • MBAs who are not from a top 10 school don’t increase their earning power.
  • It’s pointless after a certain age.
  • An MBA is too limiting.
  • An MBA makes you look too desperate.
  • Business school puts off the inevitable.

Read her arguments here; don’t miss the heated discussion in the comments that were to be expected with a strong statement like the one she’s dared to make.
